Future Leadership in Bangladesh: The Next Predicament

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Baby Boomers (Those who were born during the post World War II era from 1946 to 1964) retirement in the United States has been a growing concern since 2005 due to the sudden vacuums in the leadership positions across public and private sectors. Whilst this generational extinction in the natural cycle of evolution is neither unexpected nor is supposed to be catastrophic, this may cause endemic impacts across the country due to the absence of imbalanced generic rule of ‘demand and supply’.

Managing Projects Through Emotional Intelligence

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Managing projects demands soft skills more than the hard skills. The most realistic rationale for this empirical maxim is due to the importance of people and relationship management for the successful delivery of the projects. Speaking from my thousands hours of project management experiences, I found most of the projects suffer heavily due to the mismanagement of project stakeholders including core project team.

A Compilation of Contemporary Leadership Concepts and Personal Thoughts

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Leaders are born, not made’ – has been a widely spoken metaphor for decades. Interestingly, this belief on leadership is still a paradox since think tanks of leadership doctrine in the past and present have neither quashed out nor embraced the idea with spontaneity. However, with the evolutionary research outcomes on the Neuroscience and discovery of much talked-about Emotional Intelligence (EI) in the last decade has been the most encouraging in the belief of leadership development across the world.

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

In my previous article (Part-1) I presented a brief synopsis on the importance and impact of personal branding or personal reputation of a Project Manager (PM) in an organization based on my experiences. I also reflected as to how the lack of personal reputation can trail the project success to failure.

Personal Branding of a Project Manager: Part – 1

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Managing projects has inherent challenges. The magnitude of the challenges is even greater in functional or matrix organizations. Challenges get further multifaceted based on the level of organizational maturity on project management. A Project Manager (PM) is the first point of contract to encounter every such challenge in a project.

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Irrespective of sources of funding these projects have been predominantly contributing in the ongoing

Trend of Investment in Information Technology

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Information Technology (IT) has been globally accepted as one of the key drivers in coping up with the rapid changing marketplace. Even living a life in this century has become almost impossible without the inevitable intervention of technology in our day-to-day affairs. In fact, fusion of IT has been imperceptibly got embedded into our entire value system. In the corporate world, technology hype is now ascending towards the pinnacle faster than ever before particularly in the developing countries where acceleration of IT investment got momentum in the early 90s. In most of the developed countries where IT investment got its induction in the late 70s are already at the peak of maturity curve. Irrespective of geographical boundaries, expected ‘Return on Investment (ROI)’ from IT has been paradoxical due to the reasons, which indeed are controllable but often are overlooked or neglected by the organizations and thereby turning the blessing of IT into burden.

How Many Is One?

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

It sounds ridiculous and foolish when one asks the question, “How many is one?” Well, this was asked by one of the legendary hero of the world history ‘Alexander The Great’. At the age of thirteen Alexander’s father Philip of Macedonia arranged for a tutor who’s name was Aristotle, one of the greatest philosopher of the world. Alexander asked his teacher Aristotle, “How many is one?” Hearing the question of his young student, Aristotle was stunned and equally got amazed. But he was not sure on that moment how to answer this question; should he answer mathematically, metaphorically or philosophically? He told his young student that he would answer on the following day. And on the next day, Aristotle answered, “One can be a great many”.

A Complaint But Not A Complaint..!

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Many a times we tumble into the trap of evoking agonizing sentiments to others that often turn into an uncontrollable debacle in our personal, social and professional life due to the failure of identifying the sheer impacts of a complaint on a person. The art of expressing and communicating a complaint plays the most crucial role in regard to impacting the emotional mind of a person against whom a complaint is expressed.

A Tribute to Nelson Mandela

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

Nelson Mandela is my role model – a continuous source of inspiration and motivation. He always reminds me about - inspires me a sense – and gives me the feeling of serenity, tranquility, peace and love. In many cross-roads of my personal and professional life, I followed the rays of lights that Mandela promoted and fostered throughout his eternal life. Legacy of his life always radiates his devotion and love for humanity. Looking into the lens of past-present-future, Mandela is undoubtedly one of the greatest leaders and a visionary statesman in the history.

It was an amazing experience and enormous learning endeavor for me. I really enjoyed all the lectures of Professor Boyatzis and learnt many aspects of Emotional Intelligence (EI). Thanks to Coursera (www.coursera.org) for partnering and organizing this course. I would like to share some of my learning of Emotional Intelligence through reflecting and sharing my real life experiences.
