A Tiny Book with a Trove of Knowledge on Lean Six Sigma

Md. Abdullah Al Mamoon, PMP

‘Six Sigma’ or ‘Lean Six Sigma’ is used to be unfamiliar terminologies a few decades ago. This is now a globally recognized process improvement initiative across all types of industries. Particularly, when companies like Toyota, Motorola and GE, being some of the successful first movers of Six Sigma implementation, evidenced tangible benefits by securing service excellence, quality improvements and costs optimization, Six Sigma has become synonymous as the driving engine of any types of quality improvements.

There are huge reading materials and knowledge resources available online (in the web) and offline about Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma. To have a firsthand but very effective knowledge and understanding on Lean Six Sigma, a book titled as “What is Lean Six Sigma?” written by Mike George, Dave Rowlands, & Bill Kastle (Tata McGraw-Hill Edition) is an excellent book. The most amazing part of this book is that writers didn’t use any so-called ‘jargon’ or technical terms for which a general reader would struggle to understand or need to look for any other reference books. The prudently used sequential development and chronology of chapters would naturally excite a reader to move through the end of the book while grabbing every bit of knowledge inscribed in the contents in a fluent and lucid manner.

With only 92 pages, this book covered almost every knowledge aspects of Lean Six Sigma within the ten chapters that included some easily articulated practical examples, tables, and charts etc. for easy assimilation and understandings for any readers who don’t have previous exposures to Six Sigma.

I would advocate to include this book in your reading list (if not reading immediately!), especially if you are part of the top management or running a company as the CEO. You will find handy insights about improvement initiatives that you may consider driving in your organization. This book is definitely a treasure of knowledge for the managers and also for all levels of professionals.
